Liebster Award

Liebster Award

Hey, fellow travel and food lovers. How was your morning today? Because mine was awesome! I’ve been nominated for the Liebster Award, and I cannot contain my excitement!

(The Global Aussie

The Liebster Award is a great way to give recognition to bloggers for all the hard work and effort they place into their blog.  It is a great motivator for new bloggers to continue and push on forward—although there are people who will ignore you, there are also bloggers who are willing to share the spotlight with those new to the blogging scene.

I was nominated by Pretty Potato and The Iridescent Wings. Pretty Potato is a website dedicated to the love of food and crocheting. If you have a love for DIY projects, cooking, or crocheting, please don’t hesitate to drop by her awesome website!  The Iridescent Wings, ‘Chasing Adventure Near and Far’, is a travel blog about local travel in Southern California, US, Europe, Asia and beyond. With information on what/where to eat, things to do and events to enjoy while travelling.

Questions asked, and my Answer

1. Describe your blog in 3 words using nouns (a person, a place and a thing)

Yuen’s Cambodian diary.

2. Where did you go the first time you travelled and how old were you?

My first international travel was to Cambodia, at the age of eighteen. I went there with my adventurous mother who took me on a tour of the whole country in a week. We went from her hometown in Takeo, all the way to Siem Reap, and even through the remote town and forest of Ratanakiri. At the time, Cambodia was mostly untouched by tourism, and it was beautiful –the acres and acres of rice fields, the secluded Angkor temples, the red dirt and pristine waterfalls. I was enthralled by the different landscapes and even the different cultures and quirks in each town we visited. My mother spoke Khmer fluently, but at the time, I only knew conversation level of Khmer. But after that trip, I was inspired to learn more of my culture, my language and our writing. It also inspired me to look to other countries and see their culture, their history and life.

3. What’s your destination preference? City or Beach?

I love the beach, its white sands and relaxing atmosphere, but unfortunately, it can only grab my attention for an hour. I have a love for culture, history, and a lust for exploration. So I would definitely pick exploring the town over sitting on a beach. My travel itinerary usually consists of non-stop excursion and exploration for the first 90% of the trip, and relaxing on the beach on the last 2 days. Probably because I won’t be able to move anyways.

4. What’s the most exotic thing you’ve ever eaten?

Oh, where do I start? At the tender age of 7, while living in a refugee camp in Thailand, I was fed fried fire ants by our neighbours. At eighteen when I first got into Cambodia, I ate grasshoppers and frogs as snacks. On my recent trip to Seoul, I ate a lot of fresh seafood, including a whole live octopus. I guess I would say, even when it comes to food, I am adventurous and will give anything a try. Except for the scorpions in Thailand. I just couldn’t go through with that.

5. Where’s your favourite destination and why?

My current favourite destination is South Korea. I love the mixture of modern and traditional lifestyle. Their colourful scenery and beautiful mountains. And mostly, I am obsessed with their street scene and their street food.

6. Are you living in your dream city? If not where would you like to live and why aren’t you living there?

No, I am not. No matter how much I love South Korea, I don’t think I can assimilate into their culture and lifestyle. I will miss too many things here in Canada.

7. When you are hanging out with someone are you the person who puts away their phone or leaves it out and texts?

I am the person that always leave her phone at home on a girl’s night out, or on dates with my boyfriend. I like to give the person I am with my full attention. To have intimate conversations. But mostly I do this because I hardly make time for my friends. And when we do make time for each other, we talk non-stop without any distraction.

8. When’s the last time you shot film photography?

I’ve never touched film photography and it is my biggest regret. I wish I had joined the photography club in high school because then I would have been able to capture my moments in Cambodia when I was travelling with my mother. Those moments are forever ingrained in my memory, but I wish I had captured it physically so I could have made a photo diary for my mother.

9. Currently, what’s your most popular article and why do you think it’s so popular?

Surprisingly my most popular article is my recipe for salaw machu kreoung. I am on the first page of Google, the very first post for that specific recipe. So, there’s always traffic coming from that one post. Which surprised me because I thought I would get more traffic coming from my travel posts.

10. Favourite place to eat fries?

My favourite place to eat fries is Smoke’s Poutinerie. Double bacon, chicken, pull pork or triple meat with crispy fries deep-fried to perfection, topped with soft Canadian cheese and the best gravy in town, there’s just nothing better. And another plus for midnight snackers or night owls like myself, they’re open till 4:00 am.

11.  You get one meal that you have to eat over and over for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I would pick the fruit mangosteen, the exotic purple fruit found in almost all of south-east Asia. Low in calories, a great source of vitamin and super delicious, I don’t think I will ever get sick of eating it. It’s the one fruit I miss the most while living in Canada.

My favourite Bloggers

My favourite blogger, the blog that inspired me to start blogging was iamafoodblog, by Stephanie Le, a fellow Canadian. I love following along, and seeing her travel journey while eating some of the most amazing food life has to offer.  I am a huge food and travel lover, so her stories are always entertaining to me. Her blog has this clean line minimalistic design that I really love, and her photography always amazes me. It is still one of my favourite food blogs today.

Another blog that I follow along, and teaches me many great things about WordPress, SEO, and the basic of social media is ShoutMeLoud. It is a thorough and comprehensive blog that talks about living a boss free life with blogging. They cover everything we need to know about blogging, including WordPress, SEO, making money blogging, affiliate marketing and so much more. There’s such a wealth of information there that really helped me when I knew nothing about website design, SEO or social media. I knew absolutely nothing about blogging and all the work that is required to put up and run a blog successfully. But in these couple of months, I learned so much from them. And best of all, the information there is free. There’s no need to sign up for any mailing list or purchasing anything. I’ve learned a lot just lurking there, reading the posts, and comment section.
